Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Da alle Aufgabenbereiche eines Museums mit der Erarbeitung, Erfassung und Bereitstellung von Informationen verbunden sind, sollte die Arbeit mit Informationen im Museum durch geeignete technologische und organisatorische Rahmenbedingungen optimiert werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Bedeutung von Informationsmanagement und Datenbanksystemen in diesem Bereich. Das Informationsmanagement plant, führt und kontrolliert die Beschaffung, Verarbeitung, Übertragung und Bereitstellung von Informationen. Nach der Ermittlung von Informationsquellen, -empfängern und -bedürfnissen werden passende Formen der Informationsorganisation und -speicherung gewählt. Der Einsatz eines Datenbanksystems im Museum kann für die Erfassung, Bearbeitung und Nutzung von Informationen Vorteile bringen. Gleichzeitig muss sich das Museum aber erneut seiner Aufgaben und Ziele bewusst werden und die Betriebsstrukturen überdenken und gegebenenfalls ändern. Die Beschreibung der Situation im Sprengel Museum Hannover ergänzt die theoretischen Ausführungen. Im Sprengel Museum Hannover wird das in Deutschland weit verbreitete Datenbanksystem HiDA/MIDAS (Hierarchischer Dokument-Administrator / Marburger Informations-, Dokumentations- und Administrationssystem) eingesetzt. HiDA/MIDAS dient der Inventarisierung und Katalogisierung und ist für die detaillierte Beschreibung von Kunstwerken gut geeignet. Es musste jedoch festgestellt werden, dass das System im Gegensatz zu Programmen wie „MuseumPlus" und „arteFact" sehr benutzerunfreundlich ist und dass es Aufgabenbereiche wie Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Vermittlung und Administration kaum unterstützt. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit betrifft die Bedeutung von Standards. Um die langfristige Verwendbarkeit von Informationen zu sichern und um den Austausch von Informationen zwischen verschiedenen Informationsanbietern zu ermöglichen, müssen in Bezug auf Datenwerte, Informationskategorien, Datenstruktur und Inform
