Bedingt durch den schnellen technologischen Fortschritt können Informationen in Unternehmen immer besser und umfassender automatisiert verarbeitet werden. Dies steigert die Effizienz der Informationsverarbeitung und stellt daher einen strategischen Wettbewerbsvorteil dar. In den letzten 30 Jahren ist der Mitteleinsatz für die Implementierung und den laufenden Betrieb von Produkten zur Informationsverarbeitung exorbitant gestiegen. Die Kosten der Informationsverarbeitung betragen mittlerweile zwischen fünf und 15 Prozent der Gesamtkosten eines Unternehmens. Es handelt sich somit um einen wesentlichen Teil der Unternehmensgesamtkosten, welche wie andere Kosten auch geplant und gesteuert werden müssen, um einen effizienten Mitteleinsatz zu erreichen. Entscheidend dabei ist, dass der durch die Informationsverarbeitung-Ma nahmen verwirklichte oder zu verwirklichende Effizienzgewinn den momentanen Mittelaufwand und die zukünftig vorzunehmenden Investitionen in die Informationsverarbeitung rechtfertigt. Davon ausgehend, dass der Trend einer effizienten Informationsverarbeitung in globalen Märkten auf Grund des zunehmenden Wettbewerbsdrucks im Sinne von "Survival of the Fittest" noch weiter verstärkt wird, besteht die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Arbeit darin, einen Überblick über das Informationsverarbeitung-Controlling zu geben und deren Notwendigkeit herauszuarbeiten. Dabei werden ausgewählte Instrumente des IV-Controllings untersucht und ein Handlungsrahmen zur Einführung in die Unternehmung gegeben.
