La obra de Sánchez de Aguilar Informe contra los adoradores de ídolos del obispado de Yucatán, fue escrita en 1613 y se publicó en 1639. Es una excelente fuente para informarnos respecto a la extirpación de la idolatría, como también sobre la disputa referente al derecho exclusivo de la clase eclesiástica para juzgarla y castigarla.
Muchas de las preocupaciones y actitudes expresadas en el Informe tienen sus fuentes en otras áreas del Nuevo Mundo, de los siglos XVI y XVII. Aunque el cual se centra en la difícil empresa de eliminar las antiguas prácticas idolátricas en la península de Yucatán.
Una de las aportaciones más sobresalientes de esta obra es que el autor, en su incesante afán de persecución de los ritos originarios, nos proporcion información de alto contenido etnográfico sobre los mayas peninsulares:
estructura social,
autoridades,
hábitos alimenticios,
tipos de cultivo,
creencias de todo tipo que incluían la interpretación de los sueños o de cualquier manifestación de la naturaleza.
Se describen, además, eclipses, hechizos y sortilegios o se ensalza la devoción de los indígenas a los santos y ceremonias católicas.
En su Informe contra los adoradores de ídolos del obispado de Yucatán Pedro Sánchez de Aguilar describe prácticas de la medicina mágica. También explica el arraigo de las supersticiones y creencias populares. En México, muchas de éstas tienen su origen en la cultura maya. Incluso, en ocasiones, son el resultado de la convivencia entre la cultura maya y la de los conquistadores españoles.
El Informe contra los adoradores de ídolos del obispado de Yucatán, pertenece a la tradición literaria de la evangelización de los indígenas. Indaga en las prácticas rituales de la población indígena de Yucatán.
Pedro Sanchez de Aguilar (Valladolid, Yucatan, 1555-Santa Cruz, Bolivia, 1648). Mexico. Hijo de conquistadores, estudio en la Real y Pontificia Universidad de Mexico y fue doctor en teologia. Al regresar a Yucatan fue cura. En 1613 fue nombrado dean de la catedral de Merida. Entonces empezo a escribir esta obra, terminada en 1615 y editada en Espana en 1639. En su Informe son descritos rituales indigenas, magias y enfermedades.
