El presente libro tiene como objetivo principal aportar a entender los or�genes de la ingenier�a chilena. La ingenier�a comienza a ense�arse y profesionalizarse desde mediados del siglo XIX y este estudio se centra en ese primer medio siglo fundacional. El estudio toma como base la evoluci�n de los programas de estudio, los modelos de ense�anza, las reformas y los debates generados en torno a la ense�anza de la disciplina. Todo ello en el marco de un Estado en proceso de ampliaci�n territorial y de una sociedad dirigida por una oligarqu�a hacendal. Se suma a ello las dificultades de personal e infraestructura existentes, as� como los prejuicios sociales hacia lo "manual" y los t�cnicos, y la tensi�n con el saber, los intereses y la influencia europea. Entre las conclusiones, destacamos que la institucionalidad universitaria y estatal de la �poca model� y concibi� la ingenier�a como una profesi�n de Estado m�s que de particulares; directiva m�s que ejecutora; y eminentemente cient�fica (esto es, letrada) m�s que t�cnica. Todo lo anterior incidi� tanto en el car�cter que tom� su profesionalizaci�n, como en el desarrollo de determinadas especialidades y la desatenci�n de otras (como la mec�nica y la qu�mica), as� como en la separaci�n entre ingenieros y t�cnicos. Esperamos que este estudio contribuya a entender mejor los or�genes y el desarrollo de la ingenier�a en Chile y su relaci�n con las formas que ha tomado el devenir tecnol�gico e industrial en nuestro pa�s.
