1m Frtihjahr 1939 forderte m eh der Springer-Verlag auf, an Stelle der 1929 erschienenen und seit Jahren vergriffenen "Ingenieur-Geologie" von REDLICH- TERZAGID-KAMPE eine neue Ingenieur-Geologie zu sehreiben. Da ich iiber reiche praktische und theoretisehe Erfahrungen auf allen Gebieten der Ingenieurgeologie verftige und schon seit 1929 den ersten erdbaumeehanisehen Prtifraum in der Sehweiz fiihre, iibernahm ieh aus Freude an der systematisehen Auswertung des Selbsterlebten und an der gleiehartigen methodisehen Behandlung des gelesenen Tatsachenmaterials die mir gestellte Aufgabe. Meine einzige Bedingung war, im Aufbau, in der Auswahl und in der Behandlung des Stoffes frei zu sein. Der Verlag kam in seiner bekannten groBztigigen Weise meinem Wunsche in jeder Hinsieht entgegen. Bei der Begrenzung des Stoffumfanges ging ich davon aus, daB in einer Ingenieur-Geologie grundsatzlieh aIle die Pro- bleme behandelt werden mtissen, die der Bauingenieur bei seinen Arbeiten mit den Stoffen "Erde" und "Wasser" zu losen hat. 1m folgenden wird zu einigen Fragen, die wahrend der Niedersehrift des Buches auftauchten, Stellung genommen. 1m vorliegenden Buch wurden neben 800 eigenen Untersuchungsergebnissen ungefahr 5000 Beobaehtungsergebnisse aus BticheI'n, Fachzeitschriften, Aufsatzen und Beschreibungen verwertet. Die Quellen sind jeweils am FuBe der einzelnen Seiten oder am Ende eines Absehnittes angegeben. Beim Sammeln der Unterlagen erstreckte sieh mein Briefwechsel beinahe tiber die ganze Welt. Ieh kann hier nieht allen Kollegen einzeln filr ihre oft selbstlosen und weitgehenden Ausktinfte danken. Ich bin mir bewuBt, daB einzelne Probleme nieht so eingehend beschrieben sind, wie es mancher Leser der Ingenieur-Geologie wiinschen konnte.
