Das Inkognito ist kein Versteckspiel, kein Täuschungsmanöver und schon gar kein Geheimnis. Historisch betrachtet, bezeichnet der Begriff einen bewussten, zweckgebundenen und zeitlich begrenzten Identitätswechsel, der mit Hilfe zeremonieller Techniken vollzogen wird, gerade um Probleme des Zeremoniells zu umgehen. Vorläufer des Inkognito finden sich schon in der Antike, etwa bei Odysseus' unerkannter Rückkehr nach Ithaka. Die Ritterliteratur des Hochmittelalters mit ihrer Vorliebe für anonym bleibende fahrende Ritter nach dem Vorbild Artus' und Lanzelots stand Pate für die Entstehung des Inkognito zu Beginn der Frühen Neuzeit. In den folgenden Jahrhunderten etablierte es sich durch Reisen bedeutender Herrscher wie Zar Peter des Gro en oder Kaiser Joseph II. von Habsburg. Gleichzeitig entwickelte das Inkognito immer neue Spielarten und avancierte zu einem streng regulierten Hofzeremoniell. Für aufgeklärte Herrscher wie Joseph II. und Friedrich II. symbolisierte es die neue, vernünftige Herrschaftsform, die auf übertriebenen Prunk verzichtete. Seinen quantitativen Höhepunkt erlebte das Inkognito erst im 19. Jahrhundert und seine Spuren lassen sich bis in die Gegenwart verfolgen. Volker Barth zeichnet zum ersten Mal die Geschichte des Inkognitozeremoniells und seiner vielfältigen literarischen Verarbeitungen von ihren Anfängen bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart nach.
