This book offers a comprehensive study of the culture of gangs in Belize. Drawing on over thirty years of working directly with this sector of the population, Muhammad provides an unprecedented look inside the fascinating and little understood world of gangs in Belize. He shows that the popular accepted notion that gangs are confined only to the static definition of Crips and Bloods represents only a small part of the big picture. In fact, many youth are drawn to the attraction of the gang culture while not being involved in any sort of criminal activity. Muhammad takes us through the socio-economic and psycho-spiritual factors that influence the development and spread of this phenomenon. He looks at the antecedents of the problem of youth, crime and violence in Belize and its evolving crisis and the various approaches taken by government and non-government agencies to combating it over the last twenty five years. Having been personally involved with all the major initiatives in Belize over the last twenty five years, Muhammad writes from a vantage point of reality and not theory. Accessibly written, filled with gripping first-hand testimony of one who was on the front line, this book will be the best available guide to the beliefs and culture of street organizations in Belize.

About The Author

Nuri Muhammad is a globally renowned and highly esteemed faith leader, social entrepreneur, political commentator and public servant. Youth advocacy has played a central and recurring role in his exemplary life of servant leadership. As his name (Nuri: light) suggests, he has been a brightly shining beacon of light beckoning the youth of Belize toward a future beyond gang culture, cyclical violence and social dysfunction. He has tirelessly advocated on behalf of the youth of Belize in multiple capacities including: -First Director of The Youth Department (1993) -Project Manager, National Youth Cadet Corps -Director of Education and Rehabilitation, Belize Department of Corrections -Coordinator, Conscious Youth Development Program (CYDP) -Director, Youth Enhancement Agency (YEA) -Executive Director, Youth for the Future Nuri brings a global perspective to each endeavor he undertakes. He is able to seamlessly navigate cultural borders to find common ground and deliver outstanding results. A charismatic leader and true nationalist-Nuri has dedicated his adult life to empowering Belizeans, enriching and elevating the common discourse and finding solutions to the most pressing challenges the country faces.
