Die Quantenmechanik befruchtete die Theorie der chemischen Bindung in zwei \Veisen. Einmal durchdrangen die neuen Begriffe die qualitative Diskussion. Gewisse Widerspruche zwischen den alteren Anschauungen, insbesondere zwischen der Theorie der Elektronenpaarung der Kovalenz und dem Valenz- strichschema der Chemie, 'wurden aufge16st. DaB ein Li-Atom je nach Partner eine kovalente Einfach- bindung, eine Ionenbindung, oder im Metall mit 8 nachsten Nachbarn 8 gleichberechtigte metallische Bindungen eingehen kann, wurde in der neuen Sprache auf die allen diesen Grenzfallen zugrunde liegenden tieferen Ursachen zuruckgefUhrt undlieB sich in einheitlichen Begriffen ausdrucken. DaB Bor und andere Elemente der 3. Spalte des periodischen Systems voll abgesattigte Molekiile bilden konnen, die im Inneren teilweise "quasimetallische" Bindungsformen besitzen und sich deshalb mit dem Valenz- strichschema nicht beschreiben lassen, wurde zwanglos verstandlich. Begriffe wie "Resonanzstabili- sierung" yon Aromaten und Radikalen, "Doppelbindungscharakter" von im Valenzstrichschema als Einfachbindung beschriebenen Valenzen u. a. m. wurden ebenso zum Allgemeingut der Chemie wie fruher etwa die Tetraedersymmetrie der Kohlenstoffvalenzen oder der Begriff der \Vertigkeit. Die systematische Diskussion des groBen Erfahrungsmaterials der Chemie mit Hilfe der neuen Begriffe fand ihren Niederschlag in einer Reihe von Monographien, von denen die bekannteste das Buch von L. PAU- LING, "Nature of Chemical Bond" sein durfte. Zum anderen wies die Anwendung der Quantenmechanik erstmals den \Veg zur quantitativen Be- rechnung von Eigenschaften wie Bindungsenergie, Kernabstand, Absorptions- und Emissionsspektren usw. von Molekulen.
