Au linguiste aussi de démêler l'inextricable, chaque forme verbale étant prise dans un réseau de contraintes temporelles, aspectuelles et contextuelles; d'expliquer les différences entre les systèmes des temps verbaux d'une langue à l'autre ou d'une même langue au cours de son évolution. Cette complexité empirique a forcément des conséquences sur les choix méthodologiques et théoriques à effectuer. Plus un fait de langue est riche et complexe, plus la nécessité de proposer et d'opposer les approches différentes s'impose.
