L'homme est métaphysiquement incapable de comprendre la Déité, c'est-à-dire l'essence de Dieu Lui-même. Cependant, cela n'implique pas que Dieu ne puisse pas être saisi dans Sa nature. En effet, à travers les entités, qui sont Ses effets, nous pouvons nous approcher de Lui et, en utilisant des méthodes de négation et d'analogie, transcender l'ignorance. Néanmoins, la vraie nature de Dieu Lui-même échappera éternellement à notre compréhension. Même un ange, possédant un esprit fini, reconnaît sa propre infériorité face à l'infini divin et ne peut pleinement comprendre Dieu.

Saint Thomas relève le défi intellectuel de se rapprocher autant que possible de cette essence divine. Par conséquent, il élucide les attributs entitatifs, qui se rapportent directement à l'Être de Dieu. Ce livre se concentre sur ces attributs. L'exploration des attributs opératifs, constituant la vie interne de Dieu, sera réservée au volume suivant. En examinant ces deux ensembles d'attributs, nous aspirons à atteindre la connaissance ultime de l'essence divine que la raison peut acquérir.
