Texte intégral révisé suivi d'une biographie de René Guénon. Avec cette "Introduction générale à l'étude des doctrines hindoues", publiée en 1921, René Guénon constate la divergence entre Orient et Occident et souhaite promouvoir un mouvement d'ouverture à la pensée orientale. Pour lui, l'Occident est "despiritualisé" et sa civilisation est condamnée. Tôt ou tard, s'il veut survivre, il doit repousser la fatuité qui l'incline à croire qu'il est la civilisation par excellence. Il rappelle d'ailleurs que la séparation entre les deux mondes ne fut pas toujours absolue, évoquant notamment le caractère oriental de la philosophie de l'école d'Alexandrie, ainsi que l'apport de la philosophie arabe au monde culturel médiéval. Il énumère les nombreux emprunts que firent les Grecs aux orientaux. Dans la deuxième partie du livre, René Guénon présente une introduction à l'ensemble des pensées orientales, du monde musulman à la Chine en passant par l'Inde, démontrant que la tradition y est aussi bien orale qu'écrite et qu'elle se confond complètement à la civilisation: en Islam tradition à la fois métaphysique et religieuse, en Inde tradition purement métaphysique, en Chine tradition métaphysique et sociale bien séparées l'une de l'autre. La troisième partie du livre traite exclusivement des doctrines hindoues. Il s'élève contre les hindouistes qui distinguent trois périodes dans l'histoire de la civilisation de l'inde: védisme, brahmanisme, hindouisme. Pour lui, la tradition hindoue n'a jamais cessé d'être fondée sur le Veda. Le bouddhisme, qui n'est ni une religion ni une philosophie, est cependant de toutes les doctrines orientales la plus proche des modes de penser occidentaux. Il étudie en détail les différents caractères de l'hindouisme: les castes, la Nyâya, le Vaishêshika, le Yoga, le Mîmâmsâ, le Vedanta enfin, domaine de la pure métaphysique.
