O prefeito (Wali), órgão executivo e representativo do Governo. Cada província (wilaya) abrange um número específico de municípios. O Daïra (subdivisão) é uma extensão administrativa da província. Assim, as 58 províncias incluem 1.541 municípios e 535 Daïras. A Assembleia Provincial do Povo (APW), que é o órgão deliberativo, delibera por deliberação sobre assuntos da sua competência e sobre qualquer assunto de interesse da província. O Prefeito (Wali), nomeado pelo Presidente da República, é representante do Estado e representante da província.
