The history of bodybuilding is the history of human obsession. IRON GODS is the first book to tell it properly. The question at the heart of this book isn't about training programmes or competition results. It's the question the training manuals and celebrity autobiographies never get to: What did the greatest bodybuilders in history actually believe? What philosophy drove them into the gym before the rest of the world was awake - and what did that philosophy cost them?
IRON GODS: The Legends Who Built Bodybuilding covers 130 years of the iron game across 14 in-depth character portraits, from the Victorian physical culture pioneers who invented the modern body ideal to the contemporary Mr. Olympia champions who carry their legacy today. It is simultaneously the most comprehensive history of competitive bodybuilding ever written and a sustained argument about what genuine greatness in any domain actually requires. What's inside: The Roots of Greatness (1880s-1939) The old school bodybuilding era begins before the word existed. Eugen Sandow - the father of modern bodybuilding - invented an industry in the music halls of Victorian London, argued that the body was a moral argument, and built the first fitness empire. George Hackenschmidt, the Lion of Russia, was a world wrestling champion who read Nietzsche between matches, wrote one of the most serious philosophy books the iron game has produced, and trained every day until his late seventies. Arthur Saxon set a one-arm bent press world record in 1905 that has never been broken. Louis Cyr lifted 4,337 pounds of men on his back and was declared by historians the strongest man who ever lived. The Physique Revolution (1940s-1959) John Grimek never lost a physique contest - not once, in his entire career. The AAU changed the rules of the Mr. America contest specifically to stop him entering a third time. Steve Reeves reached the golden ratio of classical proportion and took the developed physique to a mainstream audience through cinema for the first time. Reg Park trained with weights that competitive powerlifters respected - and coached the fifteen-year-old Austrian boy who would define the next era. The Golden Era (1960s-1985) The most philosophically rich decades in the history of Mr. Olympia champions. Sergio Oliva - the Cuban defector who trained twice daily on the South Side of Chicago before and after factory shifts - won three consecutive Olympia titles, including one where no competitor was willing to share the stage with him. Arnold Schwarzenegger's visualisation practice anticipated neuroscience by two decades. Frank Zane, the mathematics teacher, won three Olympia titles at 185 pounds - sixty pounds lighter than his competitors - by understanding proportion better than anyone alive. Mike Mentzer's Objectivist training philosophy received the only perfect score in amateur bodybuilding history and was vindicated by mainstream exercise science four decades after his death. The Mass Monster Era and Beyond (1986-present) Lee Haney's eight titles built on a Christian philosophy of the body - "stimulate, don't annihilate" - that modern exercise science has confirmed. Dorian Yates trained alone in a Birmingham basement using one working set per exercise, at 900 pounds on the leg press, to six consecutive world championships. Ronnie Coleman squatted 800 pounds before police shifts for twenty years. Each chapter ends with a "Philosophy of Greatness" section - a distillation of each legend's operating principle, written to illuminate the reader's own life as much as the subject's. Each chapter also includes a detailed account of how that legend actually trained - the specific weights, the frequency, the methods, and crucially, what made their approach different from everyone around them. This is not a training manual. But it will change how you think about training.• Author(s): Clear | James • Publisher: Penguin • Publisher Imprint: Penguin Random House • Subject: General Books
