Any time that a politician or commentator compares the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to South Africa under apartheid, the response is swift denunciation. Yet many prominent, respected academics and politicians--including Jimmy Carter--have drawn such parallels, arguing that Israel's treatment of its Arab-Israeli citizens and the people of the occupied territories amounts to no less a system of oppression than apartheid did.

Peoples Apart marks the first major scholarly attempt to analyze the apartheid analogy and its implications for international law, activism, and policy making. Gathering contributors from a wide range of disciplines and fields, including historians, political scientists, journalists, lawyers, and policy makers, the collection offers a bold, incisive perspective on one of the defining moral questions of our age.

Cook, Jonathan: - Jonathan Cook is the only western journalist to be based in Nazareth, the capital of the Palestinian minority in Israel. He was previously a staff journalist on the Guardian and Observer newspapers, and has written about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict also for the Times, Le Monde diplomatique, the International Herald Tribune, Al-Ahram Weekly, Counterpunch and Aljazeera.net. He is the author of Blood and Religion (2006) and Israel and the Clash of Civilisations (2008).

Pappé, Ilan: - Ilan Pappé is professor of history at the University of Exeter. A veteran of the Yom Kippur War and two time Knesset candidate, Pappé left Israel in 2007 after his endorsement of an academic boycott of Israel led to calls for him to resign from his post at the University of Haifa. He remains one of Israel's most prominent and outspoken anti-Zionist academics. His previous books include The Modern Middle East (2005), Gaza in Crisis: Reflections on Israel's War against the Palestinians (with Noam Chomsky, 2010) and The Forgotten Palestinians: A History of the Palestinians in Israel (2011).

Tilley, Virginia Q.: - Virginia Q. Tilley is Frank L. Klingberg Professor of International Relations at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA. She has over 30 years' experience in studying the Palestine question, as well as comparative studies of ethnic conflict and the history of ideas and ideology in nation-building.
