Las infecciones hospitalarias, y en general todas las que se relacionan con la atención sanitaria, son un problema de salud pública que afecta a todas las personas. La Sociedad Española de Medicina Preventiva, Salud Pública e Higiene (SEMPSPH) Se calcula que, en los países desarrollados, entre el 5 y el 10% de los pacientes que ingresan en un hospital contraen una o más infecciones. En España el dato es del 6,84 %, en el año 2016 según el estudio epidemiológico nacional de infección hospitalaria (EPINE). Se trata de un estudio de ámbito nacional en el que participan 294 hospitales y 59.016 pacientes.

Las infecciones hospitalarias, también llamadas nosocomiales (término antiguo, que aún se usa porque el hospital era conocido como nosocomio, lugar de internamiento), tiene unos resultados graves, que van desde complicaciones en la evolución del proceso de la enfermedad, incluso fallecimiento, y prolonga la estancia en días en el hospital, este hecho, genera ansiedad y temor en la persona afectada, y en su familia. Además de incrementar unos costes que todos de alguna manera pagamos como contribuyentes.

Otro aspecto a tener en cuenta, es que tanto pacientes, como visitantes o profesionales tenemos que velar por la higiene de los entornos asistenciales, debemos trabajar para que sean seguros, y evitar posibles infecciones adoptando una serie de medidas sencillas.

Por otro lado, desde hace más de un siglo, se demostró la efectividad de medidas como una correcta higiene de manos, la desinfección, la esterilización, los aislamientos, el control ambiental, etc. en la prevención y control de las infecciones. Los programas específicos de prevención y control, que desde hace más de 40 años se vienen aplicando, han demostrado su eficacia disminuyendo en un 30% la carga de este problema.
