Pride and Prejudice is an outstanding English novel that shows Jane Austen at the height of her writing powers. Throughout the novel, the main vehicle of characterization, comedy, and satire is dialogue; narration and descriptions are given largely to placing conversation in its setting, and summarizing characters’ thoughts and feelings. The action is organized not only by what happens, but where it happens; the place itself is relevant to what occurs. Austen has employed a complex plot in the novel. There are five stories evolving concurrently in the novel. Beginning with the life and works of the novelist, the book provides the story outline, and a chapter-wise summary with critical comments. The book discusses various issues of the novel with critical insight. The author has studied the novel from varied angles of composition and publication, viz. society, title, plot, narrative technique, characterization, money and marriage, style, feminism, psychoanalytic reading, etc. The text has been enriched with several critical references. The characters of the novel have been critically sketched with deep thinking and insight. In addition, some critical responses, and a long bibliography have been provided. The book will surely serve the academic needs of students and scholars of English literature.
