Years of living and studying in Japan led author Joan F. Kelly to seek out the often hidden or overlooked ways the language is used. Based on those day-to-day experiences, Kelly came to realize that fluent teachers, especially those of Japanese descent, often bypass basic elements that make the language work because it so culturally ingrained in them that they don't even think to mention them. For English speakers visiting or living in Japan, learning to have real conversation can be fun and intriguing by discovering how native speakers actually talk, and why. Many study methods can take so long to master even the basics, and be so frustrating, that foreigners often give up after a few months. And while the time-consuming study of Japanese kana and kanji writing may ultimately be rewarding, it is not a prerequisite to first learning to speak with Japanese people - so this course is written entirely in the Romanized alphabet familiar to English speakers.

Joan F. Kelly grew up in Woodstock, N.Y., lived in Alaska and Florida, and has traveled widely around the Pacific Rim and East Asia. During nearly a decade living and studying in Tokyo, Kelly sought out the richness of the mysterious and multilayered culture of Japan, and how it influences the language. An accomplished oil painter, Kelly has also published two novels, Ryu, a historical fantasy about the origin of the Japanese people, and Revolt of the Deceived, a political fiction about overcoming despotism and restoring freedom.
