Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Ethik, die vor allem in England und Amerika gro en Einfluss auf Wirtschaft und Politik hatte und noch immer hat. Hierzulande ist sie jedoch weniger stark in den Köpfen vertreten und häufig wird sie voreilig als inhumane Ethik kritisiert und abgelehnt. Einen ersten Einblick in diese nicht unumstrittene Ethik möchte diese Arbeit ermöglichen. Hierzu soll zunächst einführend und vorausschauend geklärt werden, was der Utilitarismus im Allgemeinen ist, welche Merkmale sich finden lassen und nach welchem Hauptkriterium er operiert. Anschlie end soll der Begründer des klassischen Utilitarismus in seinem historischen Kontext als Newton der sittlichen Welt dargestellt und sein Anliegen an die Ethik deutlich gemacht werden. Hierbei wird sich zeigen, dass Bentham eine Ethik konzipierte, die aus dem Zeitgeist entstand und vier Prinzipien als Fundament aufzuweisen hat. Um diese vier Prinzipien soll es im Folgenden gehen. So werden das Konsequenzen-Prinzip, das Utilitätsprinzip, das hedonistische Prinzip und das Sozialprinzip des Utilitarismus jeweils kurz vorgestellt und erläutert. Dadurch wird deutlich werden, dass der klassische Utilitarismus eine spezifische Auffassung des menschlichen Glücks hat. Um diesen Glücksbegriff soll es anschlie end gehen, da er ein zentraler Begriff innerhalb dieser Ethik darstellt. Aber nicht nur das hedonistische Moment des Utilitarismus soll Erwähnung finden, sondern auch das kalkulierende: der hedonistische Kalkül wird nach Darstellung des utilitaristischen Glücksbegriff dargestellt werden.
