In dieser Zeit spielte er etwa 880 Rollen und schrieb einschlie lich aller Fragmente und fremder Bearbeitungen 91 Stücke.Seine Possen knüpften an die Traditionen des Wiener Volkstheaters an und entwickelten diese erfolgreich weiter. Als wesentliche Neuerungen erschienen sein parodistischer Stil und die hintersinnigen Bezugnahmen auf die soziale Wirklichkeit Wiens. Beim zeitgenössischen Publikum verhalf ihm das zu gro er Popularität - einer Popularität allerdings, die auf die Bühnenaufführungen beschränkt blieb. Theaterstücke, und noch dazu solche mit Lokalkolorit, galten gemeinhin als wenig beständige "leichte" Ware ohne literarischen Anspruch; einer ernsthaften wissenschaftlichen Betrachtung wurden sie daher lange Zeit nicht für würdig befunden. Ebenso wenig dachte man daran, Buchausgaben herauszubringen - nur 17 von Nestroys Stücken erschienen zu seinen Lebzeiten im Druck. Die schriftliche Fixierung eines Bühnentexts ist freilich immer ein komplexes Unterfangen, da dieser unweigerlich eine Mittelstellung zwischen literarischem Werk und szenischem Spiel, zwischen Schriftlichkeit und Mündlichkeit einnimmt. Das findet nicht nur in der erwähnten akademischen Abwertung seinen Niederschlag, sondern hat auch direkte Auswirkungen auf die Beschaffenheit des Textbestands selbst, der den Produktionsprozessen des Theaterbetriebs unterworfen ist. Eine Edition solch "geschriebene[r] Schauspielkunst" wird daher, je nach Ziel und Schwerpunktsetzung, eine Reihe zusätzlicher Aspekte zu berücksichtigen haben. Besagte Schwerpunktsetzung hängt allerdings vielfach vom gerade aktuellen Bild des zu edierenden Autors ab - ein Phänomen, das angesichts
