Born in 1782 in Halifax County, North Carolina, John Branch began his political career as a member of the North Carolina House of Commons in 1803. He went on to serve as the state's governor from 1817 to 1820 and then as a United States senator from 1823 to 1829. In 1829, he was appointed by President Andrew Jackson to serve as the Secretary of the Navy, a position he held until 1831. After leaving the Navy Department, Branch returned to North Carolina and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 to 1833. He then moved to Florida, where he served as the territory's governor from 1844 to 1845. Throughout his career, Branch was known for his staunch support of states' rights and his advocacy for the expansion of American territory. Haywood's biography of John Branch provides a detailed account of his life and political career, drawing on a variety of primary sources including letters, speeches, and official documents.
