Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Handlungsorientierung der Utilitarismus nach John Stuart Mill und die Deontologie nach Immanuel Kant den Sozialarbeitenden im Umgang mit moralischen Dilemmata geben können. Ziel dabei ist die theoretische Erprobung der Praxistauglichkeit beider Theorien. Die Fragestellung wird anhand der Auswertung der adäquaten Literatur und deren Anwendung auf einen hypothetischen Praxisfall beantwortet. Es wird deutlich, dass moralische Dilemmata den Alltag der Praxis der Sozialen Arbeit bilden. Da moralisch dilemmatische Situationen unlösbar sind, dienen Gedankengebäude wie der Utilitarismus und die Deontologie als Handlungsorientierung für Sozialarbeitende und nicht als Lösungsweg. Die Unlösbarkeit moralischer Dilemmata hinterlässt in Sozialarbeitenden ein Gefühl des Bedauerns und der Ohnmacht, da das Handeln notwendig scheitern muss, obwohl Handlungsoptionen bestehen. Zusätzlich zeigen derartige spezifische Situationen die Grenzen der Moral in der Sozialen Arbeit auf. Dies kann Sozialarbeiter*innen vor eine zusätzliche Herausforderung stellen: Innerhalb von moralischen Dilemmata gegen ihre persönliche Moral oder gegen die Professionalität zu versto en. Eine fundierte Auseinandersetzung mit Ethik unterstützt Sozialarbeitende im Umgang mit moralischen Dilemmata und dem daraus resultierenden Bedauern, sowie dem Ohnmachtsgefühl. Die philosophische Disziplin ist ein persönliches Argumentarium für Entscheidungen die Sozialarbeitende im Alltag ihrer Praxis treffen.
