Zwar gilt das Lateinische schon immer als Sprache der Gelehrten, dennoch sehen viele Menschen in ihr eine "tote" oder zumindest eine "aussterbende Sprache", wie auch Josef Eberle, die Hauptfigur der folgenden Arbeit, befürchtete. Diese Sorge machte er durch seine selbst erstellte und eingangs schon zitierte Grabinschrift deutlich. Aber waren seine Ängste begründet, wo sich doch heute noch zahlreiche Schüler durch den Lateinunterricht plagen müssen? Au erdem herrscht ja die weit verbreitete Meinung, Latein könne man nur noch im Vatikan verwenden. Kaum einer hat bestimmt gewusst, dass es auch zahlreiche Autoren au erhalb des heiligen Stuhls gibt, die diese alte Sprache noch heute verbreiten. Einer von ihnen war ebendieser Josef Eberle, ein schwäbischer Schriftsteller der bis 1986 gelebt hat. Er hatte die Sorge, dass "schon morgen vielleicht keiner Latein mehr verstehn" wird. Einige seiner Werke, bei denen er vor allem die Form des Epigramms umzusetzen versuchte, sollen im Folgenden vorgestellt werden. Als Vorbild könnte ihm hierbei ein anderer Dichter, der diese Art des Epigramms, allerdings schon in der Antike sehr geprägt hat, gewesen sein: M. Valerius Martialis. Deshalb ist der folgenden Arbeit zum Ziele gesetzt, der Frage etwas näher zu kommen, inwiefern Josef Eberle auch als "schwäbischer Martial" bezeichnet werden kann. Anfangs werden die Biographien der beiden Schriftsteller vorgestellt, um so eventuelle Parallelen schon im "curriculum vitae" aufzuzeigen. Schlie lich werden Werke dieser beiden Dichter, die über 1850 Jahre auseinander gelebt haben, genauer betrachtet. Natürlich kann nur auf ausgewählte Gedichte eingegangen werden, die gegenübergestellt werden sollen, sodass auch hier Gemeinsamkeiten herausgearbeitet werden können.
