Juanita la Larga, de Juan Valera, es una historia de amor entre un hombre maduro y una joven. Narrada con un costumbrismo peculiar, el paisaje, los personajes y el lenguaje, son expuestos con estilizamiento idealista.

La trama transcurre en Villalegre, sitio ficiticio inspirado en el pueblo cordobés de Cabra, villa natal del autor. Juanita es una joven humilde, la más bella y deseada de Villalegre, y se convierte en objeto del deseo de Don Paco. Ambientada en la España de mediados del siglo XIX, Juanita la Larga relata las dificultades de los personajes, sometidos a las presiones sociales y a la hipocresía de las costumbres de la época.

Valera mantiene en Juanita la Larga sus principios estéticos, enfrentados al determinismo naturalista. Según sus propias palabras en su ensayo De la naturaleza y carácter de la novela:


En el mundo de la fantasía, que es el mundo de la novela, debemos admitir, no ya como verosímiles, sino como verdaderos todos los legítimos engendros de la fantasía. El criterio de la verosimilitud fantástica es el que decide sobre la legitimidad de esos engendros, sometidos en su nacimiento, en su desarrollo y vida, a ciertas leyes de conveniencia y de lógica. Así, por ejemplo, un hombre dotado de la facultad de volar nada tiene de inverosímil en novela: pero lo tendría, si el poeta que le crease no tuviese al propio tiempo bastante magia de estilo y bastante virtud representativa para trasladarnos a las regiones imaginarias en que es verosímil que un hombre vuele y para pintárnosle de modo que, a despecho de nuestra incredulidad, le veamos ir por el aire.


En último término, en esta obra, por encima de las vicisitudes, triunfa el amor y la pareja acaba casándose.
