John Collinson Nesfield (1836–1919) played various roles in British India, excelling as an educator and serving as curate at St Michael's Church, Highgate, London. Born in Wiltshire, England, Nesfield studied at Highgate Grammar School and earned degrees from the University of Oxford. He began his career in India, holding teaching positions and later becoming the Director of Public Instruction in Lower Burma. Nesfield faced controversies over promotions and contributed significantly to English grammar education, particularly with his influential work, "A Manual Of English Grammar and Composition." His anthropological views challenged prevailing notions about caste in British India, emphasizing the fluid nature of society. Nesfield's legacy extends through his extensive writings and enduring impact on English education in India and beyond.
