Inwieweit sich die Jupitergigantensäule zu einem eigenständigen Kult herausgebildet hat, soll anhand der Gro en Mainzer Jupitersäule, das als Vorbild gilt, geklärt werden. Dabei muss zuerst ein historischer Überblick gegeben werden, der zeigen soll, wo und wann sich diese Art von religiösem Kult in Form eines Denkmals ausgebreitet hat und wie es zu dem Begriff der Jupitergigantensäule gekommen ist. Die Bevölkerung im historischen Kontext in den germanischen Provinzen ist für die Entwicklung der Jupitergigantensäulen von tragender Bedeutung. Des weiteren wird in dieser Arbeit der Aufbau einer "klassischen" Jupitergigantensäule beschrieben und versucht ein Überblick über die Entwicklungsstadien der Säule, hin zu einem Denkmalstyp einheimischer Prägung, zu geben.
