Mai 2005 wurde das Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, auch unter dem Namen Holocaust-Mahnmal bekannt, vom damaligen Bundestagspräsidenten Wolfgang Thierse in einer feierlichen Veranstaltung eingeweiht. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt mussten knapp 17 Jahre vergehen. Jener Zeitraum war geprägt von zahlreichen Diskussionen, Skandalen und Kontroversen um Notwendigkeit, Nutzen, Gestaltung und Bau des Denkmals. Dies allein, so mancher Kommentar, habe Deutschland und der deutschen Gesellschaft mehr gebracht als die letztendliche Errichtung. Gemeint ist hier die Bewusstwerdung von Standpunkten eines Einzelnen im Bezug auf das grausame Erbe, welches wir als Deutsche von unseren Eltern, Gro eltern und Urgro eltern verantwortet bekommen haben. Gerade die ''Walser-Bubis-Debatte'' erregte, auch international, ein enormes Aufsehen, was ohne ein zu errichtendes Holocaust-Mahnmal nicht zustande gekommen wäre. Doch es sollte nicht soweit gegangen werden und das Denkmal als vielleicht sogar überflüssig zu bezeichnen, denn das ist es in keiner Weise. Im Folgenden soll die Berichterstattung der grö ten und wichtigsten Berliner Tageszeitungen um die Eröffnung des Denkmals herum betrachtet werden - Der Tagesspiegel, Berliner Zeitung, Berliner Morgenpost, Berliner Kurier und B.Z. -, um eine mögliche innerstädtische Debatte herauszustellen. Wie reflektierten die Kommentatoren die Einweihung und welche Kritik wurde genannt? Wie haben die Menschen nach der Übergabe an die Öffentlichkeit das Denkmal angenommen und wie sind sie ihm begegnet? Mit welchen Erwartungen gehen die Menschen zu und in dieses Denkmal und können diese Erwartungen überhaupt befriedigt werden?
