De meeste eilanduniversums lijken zo op elkaar dat ultiem begrip of zelfs wederzijds begrip of het delen van gevoelens mogelijk is. Maar in sommige gevallen is de communicatie tussen universums onvolledig of zelfs niet aanwezig. De geest is zijn eigen plaats van herinnering, en de plaatsen van krankzinnigen en buitengewoon begaafden zijn zo verschillend van die van gewone mannen en vrouwen dat het geheugen weinig of geen gemeenschappelijke basis heeft om de basis van begrip en soortgelijk affect te dienen. Woorden worden gesproken, maar ze kunnen niet verlichten. De dingen en gebeurtenissen waarnaar de symbolen verwijzen, behoren tot elkaar uitsluitende ervaringsgebieden.
Onszelf zien zoals anderen ons zien, is een van de meest heilzame geschenken. Niet minder belangrijk is het vermogen om anderen te zien zoals ze zichzelf zien. Maar wat als deze anderen van een totaal andere soort zijn en in een radicaal vreemd universum leven? Hoe kunnen de wijzen bijvoorbeeld weten wat het werkelijk betekent om gek te zijn? Of kunnen we ooit de werelden bezoeken die de huizen werden van Blake, Swedenborg en Johann Sebastian Bach, opnieuw niet geboren als visuele of muzikale genieën? En een grens van ectomorfie en cerebrotonia.
Kan iemand zich ooit verplaatsen in een persoon die leeft in de marge van endomorfie en viscerotonia, of de gevoelens delen van iemand die op de grens van mesomorfie en soma-totonia staat, behalve binnen bepaalde beperkte gebieden? Voor de scherpzinnige behaviorist zijn dergelijke vragen waarschijnlijk zinloos. Maar voor degenen die theoretisch geloven wat ze in de praktijk als waar weten - dat wil zeggen degenen die weten dat ervaring zowel van binnen als van buiten is - zijn de problemen die worden gesteld echte problemen, uiterst ernstig voor het bestaan, sommige volledig onoplosbaar, sommige van die alleen kan worden opgelost in buitengewone omstandigheden en op manieren die niet iedereen weet.
