Zunächst wird die Bedeutung von Risikofaktoren für die Entstehung von psychischen Störungen dargestellt. Anschlie end wird auf den Einfluss sozialer Unterstützung und dysfunktionaler Kognition für die Entstehung und Aufrechterhaltung psychischer Störungen eingegangen. Abschlie end werden die Schritte des diagnostischen Prozesses im Rahmen einer psychotherapeutischen Intervention erläutert. Psychische Störungen setzten sich aus den Beeinträchtigungen in den Bereichen Verhalten, kognitive Denkprozesse und Emotionen zusammen, die zu einem persönlichen Leidensdruck beim Betroffenen führen oder aber die Fähigkeit zur Zielerreichung einer Person abblocken. Die Bandbreite psychischer Funktionsweisen, die beeinträchtigt sein können und psychische Störung beziehungsweise Psychopathologie genannt werden können, ist gro . Der Forschungsbereich in der Psychologie, der sich mit Pathologien der Emotionen, des Geistes und des Verhaltens beschäftigt, nennt sich klinische Psychologie. Ein Aufgabengebiet der klinischen Psychologie ist zudem im Rahmen der psychischen Erkrankungen, das Auseinandersetzten mit der Ätiologie psychischer Störungen. Das bedeutet, die Untersuchung der Faktoren, die das Entstehen von psychischen Problemlagen bedingen oder deren Ausbreitung begünstigen. Werden die Ursachen für eine psychische Störung bzw. Erkrankung aufgedeckt und erkannt, so lassen sich passende Behandlungsansätze und passgenaue Interventionen einleiten. Ferner ist es möglich psychischen Erkrankungen präventiv zu begegnen.
