Monistic Gnosticism believes in one reality: Spirit. It teaches that creation is flesh, and flesh is ignorance of spiritual knowledge. This ignorance is the essence of evil. Dualist Gnosticism believes in two realities: Spirit and Creation. Both are good. Gnostics hold that spiritual reality was withheld from human beings at the beginning of time. But the Gods provide ways to acquire this knowledge. The Monistic Gods provide a plan for Enlightenment. The Dualistic Gods (Creator Gods) provide the plans of Salvation and Spiritualization. Human beings who believe in these plans become eligible for Supernatural Spiritual Knowledge.

Howard Snider graduated from Goshen Biblical Seminary; served as pastor at Holyrood Mennonite Church, Edmonton, Alberta; worked as a family counselor in the welfare department in Edmonton; and received an master's degree in sociology from the University of Alberta. Later, he earned a PhD at the University of Kansas and was, for 25 years, professor of sociology at Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas. With a focus on Christian militarism and imperialism, his books reflect theological and sociological responses to crucial contemporary issues: The Cultural Creation of Christianity, 2005; Jesus or Christ, 2007; Two Gospels, 2011. Intellectually active until the end of his life, Snider completed this book only two weeks before his death on August 2, 2015.
