1714 entdeckt der italienische Geiger und Komponist Giuseppe Tartini, dass beim Spielen von Zweiklängen auf seiner Geige ein dritter Ton (terzo suono) erklingt. Tartinis Untersuchungen bringen die Bedeutung dieses akustischen Phänomens in der Musiktheorie und Harmonielehre, der Instrumentalpraxis und insbesondere für die Intonation zum Ausdruck. Der terzo suono beschäftigt Musiker und Musikwissenschaftler seit 300 Jahren. Mit der Entwicklung der Theorien hat sich auch die Terminologie gewandelt: Heute spricht man meist von Kombinationstönen. Angela Lohri zeigt mit ihrer Studie, wie Tartinis terzo suono im Lichte des damaligen und heutigen Forschungsstands verstanden werden kann. Die Analyse der Primärquellen seit Tartini bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts schafft die nötige Basis für weiterführende Fragestellungen. Es werden Aspekte zur Entwicklung der Formeln, zur Systematik und zur Perzeption der Kombinationstöne untersucht. Ein weiterer Bestandteil sind auf Streichinstrumenten durchgeführte Experimente zu Kombinationstönen, deren Ursprung au erhalb des Hörorgans liegt. Die ausführlich beschriebenen Forschungsergebnisse sind nicht nur für Interpreten, Musikpädagogen und Komponisten, sondern auch für Musikwissenschaftler, Akustiker und Instrumentenbauer relevant.

Angela Lohri absolvierte ihr Violinstudium an der Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne und an der Hochschule der Kunste Bern. Ihre Affinitat zu den Grundlagen der Musiktheorie und zum Phanomen Kombinationston fuhrte sie an die Universitat fur Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, wo sie 2014 das Doktorat erlangte (Betreuer: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Werner Schulze und Dr. Philippe Borer).
