Mit diesem Realienband findet die Wanderbühnen-Edition im Rahmen der Ausgaben Deutscher Literatur nach mehr als 35 Jahren ihren Abschluss, nachdem Manfred Brauneck 1970-75 die wichtigsten Druckausgaben des 17. Jahrhunderts in den ersten vier Bänden neu zusammengestellt und Alfred Noe 1999 repräsentative Handschriften, ergänzt durch ein Beispiel für die typische Ableitung der Spieltexte aus italienischen Libretti der Hofoper, herausgegeben hat. Damit blieben nur noch die Dokumentation aller Texte bezüglich ihrer Herkunft und der Zeilenkommentar zu leisten, was nun im vorliegenden Band erfolgt.
In der Einleitung werden die wichtigsten Aspekte der Forschung sowie Anmerkungen zur allgemeinen Quellenlage der Wanderbühnen-Texte geboten. Eine thematische und chronologisch geordnete Auswahlbibliographie ermöglicht tiefer gehende Nachforschungen. Die im Anschluss daran gebotenen Illustrationen bieten eine visuelle Ergänzung zu den Ausführungen im Vorwort. Den Hauptteil des Bandes bilden die kommentierten Abschnitte zu den jeweiligen Stücken der fünf Bände, wobei nach einer einleitenden Charakteristik des betreffenden Textes die inhaltlichen und sprachlichen Probleme der einzelnen Passagen im Zeilenkommentar erläutert werden.
