Aufgrund von unterschiedlichen Anforderungen an die Kommunikation wird es auch in standardisierten Netzen verschiedene Alternativen geben, welche nur uber Netzkoppeleinheiten miteinander verbunden werden konnen. Desweiteren erzwingen oft die raumlichen Verhaltnisse oder die Anzahl der Stationen das Verbinden von verschiedenen Segmenten eines Netzes Ober eine Netzkoppelein heit. Zur ErhOhung der Leistungsfahigkeit, der Sicherheit und der VerfOgbarkeit von LANs ist es auBerdem manchmal sinnvoll, diese auf kleine Bereiche mit hohem Internverkehr zu begrenzen und den bereichsubergreifenden Verkehr uber Netzkoppel einheiten abzuwickeln.
