Diese Studie zeigt, wie die Handlungsfunktionen dialogisch ausgerichteter Sprechaktsequenzen der Form initiativer Direktiv (Aufforderung, Befehl, Einladung, Vorschlag) und reaktive Ablehnung im Deutschen und Japanischen realisiert werden bzw. realisiert werden können. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf dem Sprechakt der Ablehnung, der anhand eines Datensets von 5200 Items untersucht wurde.

Jeder Mensch wählt seine kommunikativen Mittel, in diesem Falle also die sprachliche Realisation der Ablehnung, in Abhängigkeit von seiner eigenen Wahrnehmung der Situation, der von der Wahrnehmung abhängigen Evaluation der Aufforderung, seiner eigenen kognitiven Einschätzung der interpersonalen Konstellation (Hierarchie und soziale Distanz), seinen ganz eigenen Erfahrungen in ähnlichen Situationen, seiner während der Sozialisationsphase erworbenen Höflichkeitsprinzipien und seiner kulturellen Prägung. Die Studie macht deutlich, dass die sprachlichen Konventionen des Deutschen und des Japanischen stellenweise recht ähnlich verlaufen, andererseits aber Unterschiede bezüglich der Direktheit, des Ablehnungsparadigmas, des Einsatzes von Entschuldigungen und Alternativen, des Inhalts der Ablehnung und schlie lich auch bezüglich der Einschätzung von sozialer Distanz zu verzeichnen sind. Der durchgeführte geschlechtsspezifische Vergleich zeigt darüber hinaus, dass in beiden Kulturen Männer und Frauen andere Höflichkeitsstrategien einsetzen.
