Bis vor wenigen Jahrzehnten wurde die Kristallographie fast aus- schlieBlich als ein bloBes Teilgebiet der Mineralogie betrachtet; sie be- schrankte sich in der Hauptsache auf die Beschreibung der auBeren Form der Kristalle und die Kristalloptik. N ur sehr wenige Theoretiker stellten Uberlegungen iiber den inneren Aufbau der Kristalle an oder untersuchten andere physikalische Eigenschaften, -ie Leitfahigkeit, Elastizitat und dergleichen. Erst seit der LAuEschen Entdeckung der Interferenzerscheinungen beim Durchgang von Rontgenstrahlen durch Kristalle nahm die Kristallkunde so sehr an Bedeutung zu, daB sie heute als ein ebenso wichtiger Teil der Physik wie etwa die Thermodynamik angesehen werden kann. Uberdies steigerte sich das Interesse an der Kristallkunde wahrend und nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg noch dadurch, daB monokristallinisches Material viele praktische Anwendungen in Elektrotechnik und Infrarotoptik fand. Das vorliegende Kompendium, das der Verfasser auf Anregung des Verlages Oosthoek (Utrecht) ausarbeitete und das erstmalig 1951 in hollandischer Sprache erschien, ist in erster Linie als Repetitorium fiir Studenten gedacht; es erhebt keinen Anspruch darauf, als Lehrbuch zu gelten, jedoch wurde die zitierte Literatur so ausgewahlt, daB das Buch auch als Leitfaden fiir eine eingehendere Beschaftigung mit der Kristall- kunde dienen kann. Griindliche Kenntnis der Rolle, die die Symmetrie in der Kristallkunde spielt, ist fiir das weitere Studium unerlaBlich; auch aus diesem Grund ist der geometrische Teil des Kompendiums der umfangreichste.
