Unsere Kenntnisse von den Isolierstoffen waren um 1900 noch gering. Ihre Vielzahl, ihre unterschiedliehe Struktur, ihre oft ungenugende Reinheit, del' Mangel an geeigneten MeBgeraten erschwerten die Erforschung del' Vorgange, die in den Isolierstoffen unter dem EinfluB des elektrischen Feldes und del' Temperatur ablaufen. 11ehrere Theorien wurden zur Besehreibung del' Vorgange entwickelt. Die anfangs gebrauchlichen Dielektrika, wie Glimmer, Glas, Wachs u. a., waren fur die Anwendung in groBem "Cmfang wenig geeignet. In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden hoch beanspruchbare Dielektrika ge- funden, wie keramische l\Iassen mit hoher Dielektrizitatskonstante, das auBerst dunne Dielektrikum des Elektrolytkondensators, verlustarme Kunststoffolien und YOI' aHem das Dielektrikum aus getranktem Papier. Jedes Dielektrikul1l hat sich sein Anwendungsgebiet erobert.
