Herodes der Gro e ist eine der schillerndsten politischen Figuren der frühen römischen Kaiserzeit. Seiner Bekanntschaft mit Antonius und Kaiser Augustus verdankte er den Aufstieg zum König von Judäa. Seinem Volk verhasst, war er ein äu erst gewiefter Realpolitiker: Einerseits akzeptierte er die Gegebenheiten der römischen Herrschaft und erschien vielen dadurch als Verräter am nationalen und religiösen Erbe; andererseits stärkte er aber auch die jüdische Identität durch den prachtvollen Ausbau des Jerusalemer Tempels, dessen Westmauer noch heute als Klagemauer ein zentrales Symbol jüdischer Frömmigkeit ist.

Schalits epochale Biographie bricht mit der parteilichen Geschichtsschreibung seiner Quellen und deutet Herodes konsequent als Realpolitiker, der die Machtverhältnisse im Römischen Reich richtig einschätzte und in diesem Rahmen seine eigene Macht durch geschicktes Taktieren, aber auch durch rücksichtslose politische Morde ausbaute. Zugleich spiegelt das Buch die Auseinandersetzung des Autors um Fragen von Macht und Widerstand nach der Erfahrung des Holocaust.

Abraham Schalit (1898-1979) promovierte 1925 in Wien zu Flavius Josephus, bevor er bereits 1929 nach Palästina übersiedelte. Zeitlebens beschäftigte er sich mit dem Werk des Historikers Josephus, den er ins Hebräische übersetzte. Im Rahmen dieser Studien entstand seine große Biographie des Königs Herodes, die bis heute ein Standardwerk ist.

Daniel R. Schwartz lehrt an der Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Er ist einer der besten Kenner der Geschichte des Antiken Judentums. Seine zahlreichen Publikationen sind in vielen Sprachen verfügbar.
