Insbesondere in den deutsch sprachigen Lehrbiichem fmdet sich immer noch der Kenntnisstand von vor Jahrzehnten oder nahezu nichts. Neuere wissenschaftliche Aktivitaten sind meist auf diffizile Stabili tatsuntersuchugnen geometrisch und thermisch immer komplizierterer Benard-Probleme ausgerichtet, die im gro n Rahmen der industriellen Fragestellungen jedoch nur eine sehr untergeordnete oder gar keine Bedeutung besitzen. Noch verwunderlicher ist es, d man auch ganz grundlegende Dinge - wie etwa die Boussinesq-Approximation, die jedermarm im Munde ftihrt, der sich mit freien Konvektionsstrtimungen beschaftig- in keinem der mir bekarmten Lehrbiicher streng begriindet fmdet. All diese Mangel zu beseitigen, ist das Ziel dieses Buches, das zu schreiben mich mein verehrter Lehrer Pro fessor Dr. E. Becker vor seinem viel zu friihen Tod aufgefordert hat.
