Die Umweltinformatik ist ein neues Anwendungsgebiet der Informatik, das sich mit der Verarbeitung und Speicherung umweltrelevanter Daten beschaftigt. Umweltdaten heben sich durch eine Reihe zentraler Charakteristika von Daten aus konventionellen Informatik anwendungen (wie z.B. Buchhaltung oder Textverarbeitung) abo Erstens sind Umweltdaten in vielen F81len geokodiert, d.h. Informationen sind einem gewissen Punkt oder einem gewissen Bereich des Raumes zugeordnet. Zweitens sind die Datenobjekte haufig mehrdimensional und mussen mit Hilfe komplexer geometrischer Objekte (wie z.B. Polygone oder Kurven) repdisentiert werden. Drittens spielt die Verarbeitung von statistischen Daten und Methoden sowie von unsicherem Wissen in der Umweltinformatik eine wichtige Rolle. Viertens muG ein komfortabler Zugriff des Benutzers auf verteilte heterogene Datenbanken moglich sein. SchlieBlich sind fUnftens Umweltdaten fachubergreifend zu bewerten und darzustellen; sie mussen dazu oft aus einer fachbezogenen Primardatenbasis abgeleitet werden."
