Unter diesem Neuen Medium versteht man "[...] eine elektronische Verbindung von Rechnernetzwerken, mit dem Ziel Verbindungen zwischen einzelnen Computern herzustellen und so Daten auszutauschen" . Demnach fungiert das Internet als Kommunikationsmedium. Es vermag 'alte' Formen der Kommunikation zu integrieren, eröffnet dagegen auch verschiedenartige neue Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten. Diese haben klare Vorteile gegenüber den konventionellen Kommunikationsformen. Zum Beispiel bringt die Informationsübertragung via Email den Vorzug der Geschwindigkeit mit sich. Das ist lediglich ein Grund, warum man heutzutage eher eine Email sendet als einen Brief zu verfassen. Die vorliegende Arbeit richtet ihren Blick auf den anthropologischen Aspekt von Internetkommunikation. Mithilfe der Kommunikationsform Chat soll herausgefunden werden, inwiefern der menschliche Körper im virtuellen Raum des Internet (noch) existent ist. Funken behauptet nämlich, dass die direkte, interaktive Kommunikation allmählich vom Körper getrennt wurde. Ihrer Meinung nach findet im Internet körperlose Interaktion ohne Bezug zu Raum und Zeit statt. Diese Auflösung des Körpers würde unsere bisherige Auffassung von Körperlichkeit vollkommen infrage stellen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit befasst sich mit theoretischen Grundlagen zur Anthropologie der Neuen Medien. In diesem Zusammenhang wird ein Auszug aus McLuhans Medientheorie vorgestellt. Mittelpunkt des zweiten Teils bildet die computervermittelte Kommunikationsform Chat.
