Um weiterhin wettbewerbsfähig zu bleiben sind Anpassungsfähigkeit, Schnelligkeit sowie ganzheitliches Denken nötig. Das Wissen vieler Spezialisten muss zusammengeführt werden und die einzelnen Arbeiten sind weitgehend parallel auszuführen. Viele Aufgaben können nur fach- und abteilungsübergreifend gelöst werden. Unternehmen sind daher gezwungen, sich alternativ zum Liniensystem neu zu organisieren. Wie die folgende Abbildung zeigt, muss ein zielorientiertes Vorgehen in kleineren Teams ermöglicht und flache, flexible Organisationsformen geschaffen werden. Projekte gewinnen daher immer mehr an Bedeutung und bestimmen verstärkt den Alltag der Unternehmenspraxis. Dies gilt nicht nur für Unternehmen, für die Projektarbeit das Kerngeschäft darstellt, wie z.B. Unternehmen der Baubranche, der Software- und IT-Entwicklungsbranche, Beratungsunternehmen oder Unternehmen im Industrieanlagenbau. Genauso betroffen sind Unternehmen, die keine reinen Projekteinzelfertiger sind, sondern aufwändige, intern orientierte Projekte überwachen müssen. Beispiele hierfür sind die Installation komplexer Software, die Durchführung von Restrukturierungsma nahmen oder Prozess-Optimierungen sowie die Entwicklung neuer Produkte. Aufgrund der hohen Bedeutung der Projektarbeit für den derzeitigen und zukünftigen Unternehmenserfolg ist es wichtig, Projektmanagement ernsthafter, konsequenter und sorgfältiger wahrzunehmen, um somit das Scheitern der Projekte zu verhindern.
