Krebs stellt einen Sammelbegriff für alle bösartigen (malignen) Erkrankungen dar, welche mit unkontrolliertem, eigenständigem und gewebeschädigendem Zellwachstum (Tumorbildung) einhergehen. Griechische Mediziner entdeckten Krebsformen, die sich förmlich in das Gewebe der Patienten eingruben. Das helle, schlecht durchblutete Tumorgewebe erinnerte an den Panzer eines zum Teil im Sand vergrabenen Krebses - daher die Bezeichnung Krebs. Seit der Antike sind Krebserkrankte bekannt und noch heute mühen sich Forscher und Wissenschaftler ab, eine absolute Heilungsmethode zu finden. In Deutschland erkranken jährlich etwa 340.000 Menschen an Krebs - andere Quellen gehen von noch höheren Zahlen (bis zu einer halben Millionen aus). Speziell Personen ab 60 Jahren zeigen eine hohe Anfälligkeit. Geschehen in einer durch Mutationen vorbelasteten Zelle (möglicherweise aufgrund von Vererbung) weitere somatische, irreversible Veränderungen, so kann die Grenze zum bösärtigen Tumor überschritten werden. Je älter ein Mensch wird, desto mehr Zeit hat ein Krebs sich zu entwickeln und Sekundärtumore zu bilden. Aufgrund der niedrigen Geburtenrate in Deutschland ist diese Tendenz stetig steigend. So prognostizieren Fachleute des Deutschen Krebshilfe e. V. bis 2050 eine Zunahme der Krebserkrankungen um 30%. 221.000 Deutsche erliegen ihrem Leiden jedes Jahr. Damit stellt Krebs neben Herz- und Kreislauferkrankungen die zweithäufigste Todesursache in der Bundesrepublik dar. Die häufigste Krebsform bei Frauen ist Brustkrebs - bei Männern Prostatakrebs.
