Trotz umfangreicher Vorarbeiten ist die Sozialgeschichte Roms in der frühen Neuzeit noch wenig erforscht. Dies gilt insbesondere für die innerstädtische Kriminalität, obwohl der Wert der Kriminalitätsforschung für die Sozialgeschichte in au eritalienischen Arbeiten eindrucksvoll belegt ist. Die Untersuchung setzt an der überreichlichen Quellenüberlieferung aus der Arbeit der römischen Kriminalgerichte an, die den Zugang durch ihre Struktur wesentlich erleichtert. Zum Ausgangspunkt wurde die Justizreform Pius' IV. gewählt, zum Schlu datum die Wahl Sixtus' V. Damit umfa t die Untersuchung die Pontifikate auf dem Höhepunkt der Gegenreformation. Dennoch zeigt sich die Delinquenzlandschaft der Ewigen Stadt obrigkeitlichen Eingriffen gegenüber kaum beeinflu bar, auch nicht unter dem rigorosen Pius V. Vielmehr zeigt die römische Kriminalität in weitaus höherem Ma als bisher bekannt Gewaltdelinquenz als persistierende Lebensform. Im Verhältnis zur viel geringeren Einwohnerzahl hat die römische Gewaltkriminalität die alltägliche Gewalt moderner Gro städte eingeholt und überholt. Während die Eigentumsdelinquenz deutlich erst auf dem zweiten Platz folgt, spielten materielle Motive ihrerseits eine überragende Rolle bei der Genese der römischen Alltagsgewalt, besonders das allgegenwärtige Schuldenproblem. Deutlich lä t sich eine offen ablehnende Haltung weiter Bevölkerungskreise gegen die Arbeit der Justiz und ihrer Organe erkennen, die wahrscheinlich auf die Spur der Entstehung des bis heute in Italien spürbaren Phänomens der omertà führen kann.
