English summary: This volume continues Ulrich Barth's series of studies, Religion in der Moderne (religion in the modern period, 2003), Aufgeklarter Protestantismus (enlightened Protestantism, 2004) and Gott als Projekt der Vernunft (God as a project of reason, 2005) and further examines the perspectives he provides. Classic theories ranging from Luther to Tillich, from Kant to Habermas - and in particular the pivotal course set by Schleiermacher - are analyzed in terms of their implications for current discourse in religious theory. Points of reference are concepts such as soul and subject, mind and conscience, reason and emotion, as well as issues such as church and society, Protestantism and modernity, theology and religious studies. The intellectual breadth of the discussion is accordingly broad. The concept of religion, meaning religion as a basic manifestation of the human quest for meaning and of a culture of interpretation, constitutes the study's basic conceptual framework.
