Es gibt wahrscheinlich kaum einen Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaftler, der einer solchen Behauptung nicht umgehend widersprechen würde. Welche Argumente jedoch sollte man bereit halten, um provokante Aussagen dieser und ähnlicher Art zu widerlegen? Oder anders gefragt, welche Faktoren spielen neben reinen Sprachkenntnissen, d. h. neben Grammatik und Wortschatz, eine mindestens ebenso wichtige Rolle, um in anderen Kulturkreisen langfristig bestehen zu können? "Kulturspezifisches Wissen" ist ein Schlüsselbegriff, der im Zusammenhang mit Versuchen, eine Theorie Interkultureller Kommunikation aufzustellen, immer wieder auftaucht. Gemeint ist damit das Wissen, das sich die Mitglieder einer bestimmten Kultur nicht bewusst aneignen, sondern durch das Hineinwachsen die jeweilige Gesellschaft unbewusst aufnehmen und verinnerlichen. Interessant ist dabei besonders das implizite Wissen über Kommunikation und das menschliche Bewusstsein, da zwischen diesen beiden Bereichen eine enge Verbindung zu bestehen scheint. Diese Vermutung führt wiederum zu weiteren Fragen, die in der Interkulturellen Kommunikation sicherlich schon häufig gestellt wurden. Warum sind Kommunikation und Kognition Begriffe, die scheinbar nicht unabhängig voneinander definiert werden können? Worin genau besteht der Zusammenhang zwischen Sprache und Sprechen und unserer Vorstellung von der Psyche? Sind die Vorstellungen und Definitionen von menschlichem Denken und Kommunizieren, die wir in der westlichen Welt haben, universell? Oder sind diese Konzepte auch auf andere, d.h. nicht westliche Kulturen übertragbar? Inwiefern beeinflusst kulturspezifisches
