So vielfältig die Verwendungen des Kulturbegriff s sind, so schwierig gestaltet sich dessen Einordnung. Doch da in dessen Verwendung so viele für jeden Menschen wieder andere Konnotationen mitschwingen, ist es um so notwendiger sinnvolle Definitionen zu finden um eine Diskussionsgrundlage zu schaffen. Dazu tragen auch neue Begriffe bei, die versuchen Kultur näher zu beschreiben und auszudifferenzieren, um dann die Gesamtbedeutung des Kulturbegriffs neu zusammenzusetzen und besser zu verstehen. Ein solcher Begriff ist der Kulturstandard. Nach einer Einführung in den Kulturbegriff der Kulturtheorie und einigen abstrakten Modellierungsansätzen werden verschiedene Definitionen des Kulturstandards und deren Anwendungsmöglichkeiten betrachtet und kritisch hinterfragt. Denn schon in dem Begriff Standard schwingt eine Verallgemeinerung mit, deren Rechtfertigung zu untersuchen bleibt. Trotz der Probleme, welche die Anwendung von Erkenntnissen, die durch Verallgemeinerung von Einzelsituationen gewonnenen werden, auf wiederum andere Einzelfälle mit sich bringt, so hilft Kulturwissen doch zumindest, von unerwarteten Reaktionen nicht überrumpelt zu werden oder neue Handlungsspielräume, die möglicherweise Missverständnisse vermeiden, zu eröffnen.
