Wenn sie dabei auch oft nur eine dienende Rolle spielt, so ist sie auch in diesen Fallen meist grundlegend und wesentlich. Die Kenntnis der elektrotechnischen Grundlagen und ihrer wichtigsten Anwendungsformen ist daher heute fUr einen uberaus groBen Teil der schaffenden, verwaltenden und forschenden Menschheit unumganglich notwendig. Zur Vermittlung dieser Grundkenntnisse bietet das Schrifttum nur sehr wenig. Es existieren zwar eine ganze Reihe ausgezeichneter Lehrbucher der Elektrotechnik, doch sind diese viel zu umfangreich, um fiir den genannten Personenkreis in Frage zu kommen. Sie sind meist ausgesprochen fUr Elektro- techniker geschrieben und verlangen auch ein gerutteltes MaB an mathematischen Kenntnissen. Die daneben noch vorhandenen volkstumlichen Einfiihrungsbucher genugen aber sowohl umfangmaBig als auch in der Exaktheit ihrer Darstellung kaum den zu stellenden Anforderungen. Es erscheint also gerechtfertigt, diese bestehende Lucke durch ein kurzgefaBtes Lehrbuch auszufullen, das bei voller Exaktheit das ganze Gebiet in groBen Zugen behandelt, ohne jedoch zu sehr in Einzelheiten einzugehen und schwierigere mathematische Verfahren heran- zuziehen. Die groBte Schwierigkeit lag dabei in der Beurteilung der zu wahlenden Grenzen, bis zu denen man gehen sollte. Der Verfasser glaubte in diesem Sinne noch die einfachsten Satze der Differential-und Integralrechnung fiir die wissen- schaftlichen Grundlagen verwenden zu konnen, hat aber in der Wechselstrom- technik von der komplexen Rechnung Abstand genommen. In den mehr prakti- schen Kapiteln uber die Stromerzeugung, Umformung, Fortleitung der elektrischen Energie, ihrer Verwertung, den Bau elektrischer Anlagen usw.
