V�rios tipos de microrganismos, desde fungos, bact�rias, leveduras e uma variedade de plantas, produzem esta enzima, enquanto que nos seres humanos esta enzima est� totalmente ausente. Como esta enzima tem propriedades anticancer�genas potentes e, ao contr�rio de outros agentes quimioterap�uticos, n�o tem efeitos secund�rios (por vezes ocorrem respostas al�rgicas menores, conforme relatado em alguns estudos), atraiu cientistas da �rea da biologia para descobrir fontes potenciais da enzima.
