Là-bas met en scène Durtal, personnage double de l'auteur, au moment où il hésite encore à se convertir, plus précisément au moment où il ne sait pas encore s'il doit se tourner vers Dieu ou vers le Diable. Cette hésitation est représentée par les personnages, sur lesquels Huysmans fonde une grande partie de sa poétique. Durtal en effet s'appuie sur ses amis pour essayer de trouver sa voie spirituelle. Ce roman est donc celui d'une évolution spirituelle; il ne s'y passe pas grand chose. Huysmans introduit cependant quelques éléments romanesques, comme l'histoire d'amour entre Durtal et Hyacinthe Chantelouve ou le récit enchâssé de l'histoire de Gilles de Rais: de nombreux et longs passages laissent en effet la parole au narrateur de la biographie de Gilles de Rais que Durtal est en train d'écrire. oris-Karl Huysmans, nom d'usage de Charles Marie Georges Huysmans, est un écrivain et critique d'art français, né le 5 février 1848 à Paris, et mort dans la même ville le 12 mai 1907. Huysmans naît le 5 février 1848 au no 11 (actuel no 9) de la rue Suger dans le 6e arrondissement de Paris, d'un père néerlandais du nom de Godfried Huysmans, lithographe de profession, et d'une mère française, Malvina Badin, maîtresse d'école. Il passe toute son enfance dans cette maison. Il fit toute sa carrière au ministère de l'Intérieur, où il entra en 1866. En 1880, il collabore au journal Le Gaulois, hostile à l'expulsion des jésuites décrétée par le gouvernement. Sous la pression de ses supérieurs hiérarchiques, il cesse sa collaboration. En tant que romancier et critique d'art, il prit une part active à la vie littéraire et artistique française dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle et jusqu'à sa mort, en 1907. Défenseur du naturalisme à ses débuts, il rompit avec cette école pour explorer les possibilités nouvelles offertes par le symbolisme, et devint le principal représentant de l'esthétique fin de siècle. Dans la dernière partie de sa vie, il se convertit au catholicisme, renoua avec la tradition de la littérature mystique et fut ami de l'abbé Mugnier. Atteint d'un cancer de la mâchoire, J.-K. Huysmans mourut à son domicile parisien le 12 mai 1907, et est inhumé à Paris au cimetière du Montparnasse. La Société J.-K. Huysmans fut créée après sa mort à l'initiative de son ami le romancier Lucien Descaves. Par son oeuvre de critique d'art, il contribua à promouvoir en France la peinture impressionniste ainsi que le mouvement symboliste, et permit au public de redécouvrir l'oeuvre des artistes primitifs.
