I fondi comuni di investimento sono strumenti finanziari (Organismi di Investimento Collettivo del Risparmio, OICR) che raccolgono il denaro di risparmiatori che affidano la gestione dei propri risparmi a una società di gestione del risparmio (SGR) con personalità giuridica e capitale distinti da quelli del fondo.In Italia i fondi comuni sono stati istituiti con la Legge n 77 del 1983.La legge n. 77 del 23 marzo 1983 ("Istituzione dei fondi comuni d'investimento mobiliare") disciplinò un fenomeno che, di fatto, aveva avuto la sua prima, timida apparizione nel nostro Paese (attraverso i fondi atipici e quelli di diritto lussemburghese) e favorì l'accesso di larghe masse di risparmiatori alla proprietà azionaria, contribuendo a determinare un consistente aumento della numerosità e dei settori di appartenenza dei titoli quotati alla borsa valori.

Gli Hedge Funds sono dei fondi d'investimento che, attraverso l'utilizzo di strategie piuttosto complesse come la leva finanziaria, l'apertura di posizioni long e short e l'investimento in titoli derivati sui mercati nazionali e internazionali, hanno come obiettivo quello di massimizzare il rendimento derivante dall'investimento. Ciò che contraddistingue gli hedge fund è in primo luogo l'alta rischiosità degli investimenti effettuati, nonché la diversa tipologia di rendimento verso la quale sono proiettati.

Gli E.T.F. (Exchange Traded Funds) sono una particolare categoria di fondi, le cui quote sono negoziate in Borsa in tempo reale come semplici azioni, attraverso una banca o un qualsiasi intermediario autorizzato; non sono fondi comuni d'investimento e neppure Sicav e sono caratterizzati da una gestione totalmente passiva in quanto replicano l'andamento di un determinato indice. L'opera del gestore si limita a verificare la coerenza del fondo con l'indice di riferimento (acquisizioni societarie, fallimenti, crolli di quota possono far escludere o entrare altri titoli nell'indice), nonché correggerne il valore in caso di scostamenti.

I CFD (Contract For Difference) sono strumenti finanziari derivati che consentono di trarre vantaggio economico dalle variazioni di prezzo di un'attività finanziaria sottostante, quale può essere un'azione, un cambio valutario, una materia prima; anziché negoziare o scambiare fisicamente l'attività finanziaria, il CFD rappresenta un'operazione in cui due parti convengono di scambiare denaro sulla base della variazione di valore dell'attività sottostante che intercorre tra il punto in cui l'operazione viene aperta e il momento in cui la stessa viene chiusa. Attraverso i CFD si opera, quindi, sulle differenze di prezzo dei contratti, guadagnando o perdendo in funzione della differenza tra il prezzo di acquisto e il prezzo di vendita del sottostante, moltiplicato per il numero di CFD scambiati.
