Se trata de una revisión crítica sobre un área previamente explorada en gran detalle por dos clásicos en la historia de la educación superior en Estados Unidos: La Universidad norteamericana: Una Historia (1962) de Frederick Rudolph y Educación Superior en transición: Una historia 1636-1976 (1976) de John Brubacher y Willis Rudy. La intención de este trabajo es la de actualizar las investigaciones anteriores de manera que puedan ser leídos por cualquier que esté interesado en el tema. Ofrece al lector una base para una comprensión general de las influencias sociales y políticas en la currícula a través del tiempo. El libro concluye con un lineamiento sobre los desafíos que debe enfrentar la educación superior contemporánea intentando abarcar los diferentes puntos de vista en torno a la multiculturalidad y la fragmentación de la currícula, entre otros temas. Lucas permite encontrar en el estado actual del campo las huellas del pasado para entender sus influencias y proyectar un futuro en la educación superior norteamericana.
